CHICAGO | Incantare & The Newberry Consort present: IL FURIOSO!

Incantare and The Newberry Consort close their 2023-2024 seasons with Renaissance music influenced by the life and art of Venetian painter Jacopo Tintoretto, presented in collaboration with Incantare. This visually and aurally sumptuous program explores music by Italian composers from the Venetian School, juxtaposing musical works by Andrea Gabrieli, Gioseffo Zarlino, Nicola Vicentino, Leonora Orsina, Madalena Casulana, Diego Ortiz, and Giovanni Priuli against visual art by Tintoretto and other Venetian artists such as Titian, Veronese, Bellini, and Bassano. A mixture of opulent antiphonal works for instruments and voices balances small-scale improvisatory solos, dances, and canzonas that mirror the richly-hued textures of the paintings.

CHICAGO | The Newberry Consort - In the Castle of the Moon: The Music of Sophie Elisabeth, Duchess of Brunswick-Lüneburg

The Newberry Consort opens its 37th season with the delightful music of Sophie Elisabeth, Duchess of Brunswick-Lüneburg. Described by her teacher Heinrich Schütz as “the incomparably perfect princess in all other princely virtues, especially in the praiseworthy profession of music,” Sophie Elisabeth (1613-1676) was a composer, poet, translator, arts patron, and impresario who transformed Lower Saxony into a thriving center for music and the humanities. Her musical talents and patronage made her famous during her lifetime and influenced early Baroque music in Germany for years to come.

Despite her many accomplishments, Sophie Elisabeth has nearly vanished from history. The Newberry Consort is thrilled to reintroduce her musical works, many of which have never been performed in the United States. The program features selections from over a hundred surviving pieces, including strophic songs, instrumental sinfonias, dances, sacred concertos, and music from her Festspielen—masque-like music dramas that Sophie Elisabeth referred to as “song-ballets.” The concerts will also include works by her teachers, including the influential Heinrich Schütz and English expatriate William Brade. Audiences will hear singers, viola da gamba, organ, lute, harpsichord, and a consort of strings and trombones. The soundscape recalls that of Sophie Elisabeth’s “Castle of the Moon”—an interpretation of the name “Lüneburg” by the dukes who lived there, as well as an allusion to female power.

This concert is presented in partnership with Haymarket Opera Company, kicking off a two-week mini-festival of 17th-century music by women composers. In addition to The Newberry Consort’s 𝘐𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘊𝘢𝘴𝘵𝘭𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘔𝘰𝘰𝘯, Haymarket Opera will produce Francesca Caccini’s 𝘓𝘢 𝘭𝘪𝘣𝘦𝘳𝘢𝘻𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘦 𝘥𝘪 𝘙𝘶𝘨𝘨𝘪𝘦𝘳𝘰 𝘥𝘢𝘭𝘭’𝘪𝘴𝘰𝘭𝘢 𝘥’𝘈𝘭𝘤𝘪𝘯𝘢. CHICAGO | In Stile Moderno: Virtuoso Music from the Seicento and Beyond - Newberry Consort

The Seicento, the turn of the seventeenth century in Italy, was a time of transition for musicians. Instrumental music was on the rise, virtuosity was in vogue, and composers were exploring new ways of writing for instrumentalists and singers. The stile moderno, or “modern style,” in turn affected music throughout early modern Europe, from England to Vienna to Poland and further. The Newberry Consort presents a selection of this music for Baroque violin, soprano, sackbut, and historical keyboards by Castello, Notari, Marini, Jarzebski, and more. Join us on a journey to the weird and wonderful world of seventeenth-century Italy and beyond, where old meets new!
